Chaim Vital AKA Hayyim ben Joseph Vital AKA Rabbi Haim Vital Calabres

Italy / Israel /Damascus, Syria 1543 - 1620

Comments: successor and scribe to The ARI, Isaac Luria , although he only studied with him in the last two years of the Teacher's life; Rabbi; Qabalist; al-Qimiya aka Alchemy; believed in the 4 personality types ascribed to earth, air, fire and water by Aristotle, Galen and Empodocles in 444 B.C. E.; ritual of Tikkun Hazot; the Golem; Alchemy; Doctor; Pharmacist; Rabbi; Teacher; for two years before meeting the Ari he neglected Torah to study science, medicina and metals, but returned to his studies when he met his Teacher, who told him he had "To devise skillful works, to work in gold and silver" (Exod. 35;32) written on his forehead... he decided to WORK in Qabalah again rather than Alchemy; This manuscript does mix some Qabalah into the Alchemy, which he usually kept separate, and a lot section indexed contained Magic Squares, perhaps similar to the Abramelin WORK of Abraham Von Worms or Rabbi Abraham Abulafia; Wrote Hebrew, Arabic, Bedouin, Turkish, Persian, Latin, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese & German; Ceremonial magician; Palmistry; Astrology; sigil magick circles; in his unpublished notebooks are the Abramelin square in Hebrew, 3 variations , Fairly strong case for him secretly being the Mage Abramelin lauded by "Abraham the Jew", perhaps his fellow student, then disciple, Abraham Cohen de Herrera; Some modern scholars prefer Moellin aka Rabbi Jacob ben Moses ha Levi Moellin as the possible Abramelin; visualizing the Divine NAMEs in the colors of the appropriate Sepheriah in meditation; palmistry, Astrology, geomancy, talismans, a "wand of Lilith" ( !!! ), the diagram of Adam Kadoman and Magick Circle designs, amazing stuff!; taught the Lurianic technique of "yihud', hosting the joining of God and HIS Shekinah as ONE;

Quotes: "when you shall think upon something which points to the [sefirah of] Keter and pronounce it with your mouth, you shall direct [your thought] to and visualize the name YHWH between your eyes with this vocalization, which is the Qammaz [vowel pronounced as a long a] under all the consonants, its visualization being white as snow. And he [!] will direct [your thought] so that the letters will move and fly in the air, and the whole secret is hinted at in the verse, “I have set the Divine Name always before me.”; because it is the secret of Da`at, the twentytwo letters of the Torah are rooted in it, like the lower Yesod. And from the supernal dew that flows from the three mohin of the `Attiqa’ [Qaddisha’] to the head of Ze`ir ‘Anppin, from there the twenty-two letters are emanated to the Da`at...and from this firmament, that is the secret of Da`at, a pillar is emanated, which is the secret of the spinal column, that is descending from the Da`at, from its aspect of Yesod, that is the central opening, and it emanates until the soil of the garden, which is Malkhut, and from there the souls ascend and descend continuously. In it [the pillar] there are the three colors of the rainbow, because the Yesod is called rainbow, and it is comprised from Hesed, Gevurah [and] Tiferet, [which are] the three colors. And, according to the root of the soul, it ascends to one of those colors. During the copulation that takes place during the head of the month and Sabbath, the three lights of Hesed, Gevurah and Tiferet, [stemming] from the supernal Da`at, are revealed, in order to illumine the three colors of that rainbow, which is the pillar. Then the souls ascend on it in the secret of the female waters, to the firmament of the Da`at of the Feminine [configuration, Nuqbba’]...this pillar is in the middle of the garden and it is the aspect of Tiferet, and beneath the Tree of Life that river emerges;
